Cooling your computer – what to choose to lower the temperature?

It takes approx. 3 minutes to read this article

Every gamer knows that good cooling of computer components is an absolute must. Without it our equipment can be exposed to a significant decrease in performance.

If we do not provide our computer with an appropriate temperature, we are exposed to a significant reduction in the life-span of all computer components. Overheating of the graphics card may lead to graphical errors called artifacts. But what is the situation with one of the most important elements of every computer – the processor?

Temperature and processor damage

It is used to think that when the processor of a computer is insufficiently cooled, it can become damaged. This is not entirely true. After all, most modern processors use a technology called dynamic frequency scaling. It can be called a kind of thermal fuse

When the temperature of the processor exceeds a certain threshold, the system begins to reduce the power of the processor so as to avoid possible damage. Consequently, it leads to a significant slowdown of the whole system. So, as you can see, we do not have to be afraid that the increased temperature will lead to processor failure.

Of course, this does not mean that we should ignore the cooling issue. Maintaining the correct temperature is still essential for efficient hardware operation. We should also remember that dynamic frequency scaling is a characteristic feature of the processor. The graphics card, among others, also requires good cooling. So this is an issue that should not be overlooked. You can take care of the appropriate system temperature in many ways.

Housing

This is the first important element that must ensure adequate air circulation. Different cases also have different fan installation options. It is best to choose one that has the fans evenly distributed between the front, top and bottom. The power supply unit should be placed at the bottom of the case, as this significantly reduces its temperature and increases the aesthetic value of the computer.

Fans and Heat Sinks

Both of these devices make up the most classic example of a computer cooling system. The task of a heat sink – sometimes called a radiator – is to dissipate heat from the so-called cap. This is where the heat is transferred through the running processor

The heat is transferred to the heat sink via special tubes filled with liquid or gas – so-called heat-pipes. On the other hand, fans are mounted in specially prepared for this purpose areas of the case. When selecting fans, the air pressure inside the case should be taken into consideration. As soon as the fans start pumping out more air than is sucked in, a vacuum is created in the case. One of its effects is sucking in dust from the environment, which makes it difficult to keep the equipment clean.

Liquid cooling

When it comes to price, this is by far the most expensive solution. If you decide on this type of cooling, you should buy a special kit, which is designed to most effectively cool all the equipment. This solution is very efficient and almost completely silent. It also gives very large customization possibilities.

Summary

It is difficult to unambiguously advise which cooling method to choose. Among other things, you need to take into account the budget, noise level and efficiency, but also the technical conditions of the rest of the components used.
